He told me, “Payroll isn’t that hard.”
And for a while… he was right.
A few months ago, I sat down with a business owner who decided to handle payroll himself.
Small team.
Steady business.
Nothing complicated.
He figured he’d save a few bucks and just do it on his own.
At first, everything looked fine:
• Employees got paid
• Taxes were being taken out
• No one complained
But behind the scenes…
Things were starting to slip.
A missed filing here.
A late deposit there.
One quarter got filed… but not paid.
Another got paid… but not filed correctly.
No alarms.
No warning signs.
Just small mistakes quietly stacking up.
Until one day…
Someone from the IRS showed up at his business.
Not a letter.
Not a notice in the mail.
An actual person.
That’s when it hit him…
Payroll isn’t just “paying employees.”
It’s:
• Filing the right forms (941s, state filings, unemployment, etc.)
• Depositing taxes on the correct schedule
• Making sure what’s filed matches what’s paid
• Keeping clean, accurate records
And when something is off…
The IRS doesn’t go after the employee.
They go after you.
By the time everything got cleaned up:
• Penalties had piled up
• Interest was added
• Hours were spent digging through records
• And the stress? Way worse than the cost he was trying to save
He didn’t save money.
He delayed the bill… and made it bigger.
Here’s the truth most business owners learn the hard way:
Payroll feels simple…
Until it isn’t.
There’s no room for “close enough.”
There’s no “I’ll fix it later.”
Because the IRS is already keeping score.
The business owners I work with don’t outsource payroll because they can’t do it.
They do it because:
• It saves them hours every month
• It reduces the chance of costly mistakes
• It keeps everything filed, paid, and tracked correctly
• And in many cases… it’s cheaper than what they expected
If payroll feels like something you’re “hoping is right”… that’s your sign.
👉 If you want to make payroll easier (and possibly cheaper than what you’re paying now), reply “Payroll” to the email.
Talk soon.
